Billabong Pro Teahupoo
Getting to the event location takes effort as one may opt to paddle for two miles or take a boat ride to get to the spot of the Chopes.
Chopes is a wave of mother nature not meant to be tamed. This surf breaks around seven hundred meters from the shore and provides a nice challenging foam ride. The surfing gets exciting and dangerous as the wave breaks along a crescent shaped reef making it treacherous for any surfing mortal. One can only escape via a vertical take off or experience the bone breaking angst of the barrels and the razor like corals that waits where the Chopes settles down.
A lot of past surfing contestants have realized the danger by sustaining back injuries, gashing wounds, or shoulder popping from their sockets. Worst case scenario is a lifeless surfer recovered after the tantrum of great waves.
Locals say that one must be humble when he faces the surf in this part of the globe. The waves are really wild making surf lovers shake their heads in awe and disbelief as over and over again surf riders are toppled under water. This is a spot where no attitude is daring enough. This is the spot where boys are separated from men and where champions are taught their lessons.
The event was born in 1999. Since then, the surfing community that deals with the Chopes has learned that they can be ready for anything tough that may come in their lives after facing the great wave.
Night life is not the name of the game after surfing here. It is your feet still feeling the powdery sand of the beach that is considered a major celebration.
